The depletion of the red supergiant envelope radiative zone during common envelope evolution

چکیده
Abstract We conduct one-dimensional stellar evolution simulations of red supergiant (RSG) stars that mimic common envelope (CEE) and find the inner boundary convective zone moves into initial radiative zone. The convection practically disappears only when RSG radius decreases by about an order magnitude or more. implication is one cannot split CEE stage during which companion spirals-in inside removes it, a second slower phase orbits stable mass transfer takes place. At best, this might take place orbital separation several solar radii. However, time other processes become important. conclude as yet, commonly used alpha-formalism based on energy considerations best phenomenological formalism.

The Molecular Envelope around the Red Supergiant Vy Cma
We present millimeter interferometric observations of the molecular envelope around the red supergiant VY CMa with the SubMillimeter Array (SMA) . The high angular resolution (< 2) allows us to derive the structure of the envelope as observed in the 1.3 mm continuum, CO(2-1), CO(2-1) and SO(65-54) lines emission. The circumstellar envelope is resolved into three components: a dense, compact and...
متن کاملCommon Envelope Evolution
The common envelope phase of binary star evolution plays a central role in many evolutionary pathways leading to the formation of compact objects in short period systems. Using three dimensional hydrodynamical computations, we review the major features of this evolutionary phase, focusing on the conditions that lead to the successful ejection of the envelope and, hence, survival of the system a...
متن کاملCommon Envelope Evolution Redux
Common envelopes form in dynamical time scale mass exchange, when the envelope of a donor star engulfs a much denser companion, and the core of the donor plus the dense companion star spiral inward through this dissipative envelope. As conceived by Paczynski and Ostriker, this process must be responsible for the creation of short-period binaries with degenerate components, and, indeed, it has p...
متن کاملCommon envelope evolution
Many binary star systems are not wide enough to contain the progenitor stars from which they were made. One explanation for this is that when one star becomes a red giant a common envelope forms around both stars in the binary system. The core of the giant and its companion star continue to orbit one another inside the envelope. Frictional energy deposited into the common envelope may lead to i...
متن کاملEnergy and Angular Momentum Deposition during Common Envelope Evolution
I consider three processes which enhance mass loss rate from a common envelope of a giant star with a main sequence or a white dwarf companion spiraling-in inside its envelope. I consider deposition of orbital energy and orbital angular momentum to the giant’s envelope, and in more detail the formation of jets by an accreting companion and their propagation in the envelope. I find that in many ...
